Description
On offer this week I am auctioning off THE two greatest Charlie Parker record rarities in TWO SEPARATE AUCTIONS!!   Firstly, on offer is "CHARLIE PARKER: THE BIRD BLOWS THE BLUES: DIAL LP-1", this the first long playing jazz record ever released (in the spring of 1949), which was pressed in a run of probably less than fifty, only available by mail order directly from the company AND only for a period of about three weeks, when it then became Dial LP-901!! Secondly, on offer is a complete set of the three legendary and mythical bootleg 10” 78 rpm recordings: THE BLACK DEUCE: A NITE AT CARNEGIE HALL (Parts 1-6) with DIZZY GILLESPIE And CHARLIE PARKER, incredible AS NEW, UNPLAYED condition!!!   Needless to say these records are EXTREMELY RARE with less than ten copies of Dial LP-1 in existence and complete sets of the BLACK DEUCE 78’s also impossible to find, with this possibly being the only unplayed complete set extant!!   On auction in this listing is the unplayed set of the three (3) 10” 78 rpm records of ‘A NITE AT CARNEGIE HALL: Parts 1-6’, with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker on ‘THE BLACK DEUCE LABEL'. The 12" LP: Dial LP-1 is listed in the other separate auction and is not included in this auction!!   These famous records are of the Gillespie-Parker Quintet portion of bebop’s first concert at Carnegie Hall on September 29, 1947. The Gillespie Big Band was the featured attraction on the programme with Parker only scheduled to appear in a short set with Dizzy and the rhythm section drawn from the big band. Significantly this was the first time Bird and Diz had played together since the Billy Berg engagement out on the west coast in December, 1945, which proved almost fatal to Parker, resulting in a six-month stay at Camarillo State Mental Hospital, after the disastrous ‘Lover Man’ session for Dial. The atmosphere at Carnegie Hall was electric as Parker strode on to the stage after the intermission to perform. Fireworks were expected, and Parker and Gillespie did not disappoint with performances of bop standards played in a highly charged competitive atmosphere, which resulted in a display of astonishing musical powers of both men!!   Unbeknownst to the musicians, their set was recorded by a sound studio disc cutter (actually two cutters) on an upper hall in the auditorium. After the concert acetate dubs of the master acetates were made and given to Parker and Gillespie. But that wasn’t the end of things because shortly after bootleg copies were secretly released on ‘THE BLACK DEUCE’ label and sold under the counters of some record stores in New York. The label had no address, office, or staff and supplied the discs on a strict cash-only basis to retailers. The clandestine sale of the records lasted around three weeks before sales were stopped when an injunction was obtained against the record stores, as announced in a front page story in Down Beat in late 1947.   The untitled performances on the discs were of a) ‘A NIGHT IN TUNISIA’ parts I and II, b) ‘GROOVIN’ HIGH’ parts I and II, c) ‘DIZZY ATMOSPHERE’ and d) ‘CONFIRMATION’. The first two titles are listed as parts I and II as they were each on both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ of one record each. It is unknown as to how many records or sets were pressed but it is probably less than one-hundred (100). Taking into account that a number of sets were confiscated and destroyed, the actual number that reached public circulation was probably much less.   Complete sets are very rare as expected, but this unplayed set may be the only one extant. All the labels are MINT showing absolutely NO spindle or needle marks. The discs themselves show very light storage scuffs and rubs, but the surfaces are fresh and glossy and show no scratches or other imperfections. Basically these discs are AS NEW and look as if they were made yesterday.   I proudly offer this unique and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for serious collectors to acquire these most historically important and rare 78 rpm recordings of the modern jazz era.   Please see the SUPERSIZED SCANS of all of the records’ sides and close-ups of all the labels. I invite any and all questions and requests for further scans to interested parties. Shipping will be insured and traceable with the cost dependent on your location and the amount of the winning bid that the insurance will be based on. The records will be TRIPLE BOXED for their safety and your peace of mind! Please note that the dimensions and weight of the shipping box below are only approximate!!   Preferred payment is by International US Dollar Money Order or certified cheque. I will however accept PayPal if the buyer helps me out with the very high fees they charge international clients.   Many thanks for looking and good luck to everyone. Please be sure to check out the other great Charlie Parker rarity I have currently listed, namely ‘THE BIRD BLOWS THE BLUES’ on Dial LP-1, the first jazz LP issued.
